Instead of carrying over the current SRX's architecture, the 2010 SRX is a smaller, five-passenger SUV built on a modified version of GM's midsize sedan platform. It will be shared with the Saab 9-4X among other GM vehicles.
The new crossover borrows many of its design cues from the Provoq concept shown earlier this year at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, including the overall shape of the greenhouse and the chevron-shaped grille.
Entry-level models will most likely come with the 2.8-liter V6 currently used as the base power plant in the European CTS sedan. With only 210 horsepower, the 2.8-liter V6 looks more like a nod to fuel economy above all else. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions will be available, as well as a more powerful 300-hp 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Cadillac needs to deliver more than just a more fuel-efficient SUV; it needs to have standout styling as well. That's because by the time the new Cadillac SRX goes on sale next year, it will have a formidable list of competitors. Similar compact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class will all be competing for the same buyers.
Though the Cadillac SRX was introduced with some fanfare in 2004, it has never lived up to sales expectations. Just 22,543 examples of the Cadillac CTS-based crossover sold in 2007.
The 2010 Cadillac SRX will debut next January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and should be in dealerships by mid-year.
What this means to you: Cadillac is enjoying some success with its new CTS sedan, and it looks like the new SRX could be a winner, too. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
