DETROIT — The second-generation Cadillac SRX will enter the 2010 model year this summer in a smaller size and with a choice of two new direct-injection gasoline V6 engines. It will debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2010 SRX will go into production in late spring in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, and should reach U.S. dealers in June or July. When it arrives, it will boast all-new sheet metal and a new underbody architecture that's shared with the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and the upcoming Saab 9-4X.

The new SRX will be smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with seating for five, and will no longer come with a V8 option. Instead, buyers can choose from one of two DOHC V6s. The standard 3.0-liter V6 is rated at 260 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a 6T70 Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic transmission. The optional turbocharged 2.8-liter unit makes 300 hp and 295 lb-ft and is coupled to an AF40 Aisin Warner six-speed automatic. GM says it expects EPA highway mileage ratings in the mid-20s.

The 2010 SRX will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive variants. The on-demand AWD version features an electronic limited-slip differential. The SRX gets real-time damping and standard 18-inch wheels and tires, with 20-inch sizes also available.

Among the advanced systems offered on the 2010 SRX are adaptive headlamps, a choice of turn-by-turn navigation or a full pop-up nav system with 3D imaging, plus an integrated hard drive for audio storage.

Inside Line says: The next SRX will be smaller and lighter, but also quicker and more frugal. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
