2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT
What's so special about it?
Just when you thought it was safe to enter a Cadillac dealer again, along comes the Escalade EXT. Part SUV, part truck, the EXT is an upscale version of Chevrolet's Avalanche crossover pickup. It features a unique mid-gate system for optimum versatility. Locked in its standard position, the Escalade EXT carries five passengers in typical Cadillac comfort, while providing a 5-foot, 3-inch utility bed. Lower the window and drop the mid-gate, however, and the Escalade EXT transforms into a full-size pickup, complete with an 8-foot, 1-inch-long bed that can easily handle the ubiquitous 4x8-foot sheet of plywood.
The rest of the EXT gets the full Cadillac Escalade treatment, with a powerful 345-horsepower V8, all-wheel drive, stability control, auto-adjusting suspension and exclusive 17-inch wheels and tires.
On the inside, passengers are treated to typical Cadillac luxury. There's leather everywhere, the seats and outside mirrors are heated, an electronic climate control system keeps the air at just the right temperature, and a Bose sound system with an in-dash 6-disc changer makes sure that the roar of the burly V8 under the hood never makes its presence known.
If you've often thought about dropping a ton of cash on a new luxury SUV but can't tear yourself away from the practicality of your trusty ol' pickup truck, the EXT might just be your ticket.
Why should you care?
As SUVs continue to evolve, manufacturers are being forced to transform them into more than just overgrown station wagons. Cadillac's attempt at bridging the gap between pickup and SUV is a trend that is likely to gain momentum in the years to come.
