Priced: 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid

DETROIT — The 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid will start at $71,685, including a $950 destination charge, when it goes on sale this month. Cadillac said that price represents a premium of $3,600 over a comparably equipped Escalade.

However, the Escalade Hybrid, which is built on the same platform as the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and the 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid, is dramatically more expensive than its siblings. The Escalade Hybrid costs $18,390 more than the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, which starts at $53,295, including destination. The 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid starts at $53,755, including destination.

Outside of the GM family, the Escalade Hybrid also is priced tens of thousands of dollars more than other large hybrid SUVs. The 2008 Lexus RX 400h starts at $42,345, including shipping. The 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid starts at $45,570, including shipping.

Expect a fully loaded 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid to top out at $75,330. The only two options are four-wheel drive ($2,550) and power running boards ($1,095).

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell told Inside Line that the automaker will offer leasing on the 2009 Escalade Hybrid. "It will be offered in the same fashion as other Escalades," he said. "It doesn't have a different proposition."

The EPA says a two-wheel-drive Escalade Hybrid returns 20 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway. The EPA says the conventional 2009 Escalade with two-wheel drive returns 12 mpg in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway. The same vehicle using E85 returns 10 mpg in city driving and 14 mpg on the highway.

The Escalade Hybrid uses GM's advanced two-mode hybrid technology, developed in cooperation with BMW, Daimler and Chrysler, and similar to that used on the Aspen Hybrid.

What this means to you: At these prices, maybe they should change the name to Cadillac Escalate. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
