    What Is It?

    What's Special About It?
For 2007 GM's entire lineup of full-size SUVs is getting a long-awaited makeover, including its family of Cadillac Escalades. GM took the wraps off the Escalade several weeks ago, but saved the larger ESV model and the EXT model, which has a pickup truck bed, for the Detroit show.

Based on the new Chevy Suburban, the seven-passenger ESV is 21 inches longer than the conventional Escalade, while the Escalade EXT receives slightly more cargo bed space than its predecessor (45.5 cubic feet vs. 41.1 cubic feet). Both models will be available this summer.

Under the hood of every Escalade is a new all-aluminum 6.2-liter V8 which produces 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque. Valve timing is varied to increase low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower — a first on a mass-produced overhead valve V8 engine. All Escalades use GM's new 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission which the company promises will increase both performance and fuel economy.

The new chassis is more rigid to support the increase in power and provide a more stable and responsive platform according to GM. The fully boxed frame increases torsional stiffness 49 percent. Brakes are all-new, too. All Escalades receive larger four-wheel discs and a new Bosch ABS system to work in conjunction with StabiliTrak stability control. StabiliTrak now includes rollover mitigation technology which can predict a potential rollover and individually apply the brakes to prevent it.

Inside, all three Escalades are bigger than before and have interior styling unique to the Escalade line. The instrument panel is lower and farther forward and contains gauges with white needles and blue accents over a white-LED background. There's no shortage of leather either. It covers the seats, door trim and center console.

All Escalades come with an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system and a DVD system with an 8-inch flip-down screen. There's also a Bose stereo with DVD audio/video, CD audio/video, MP3 and XM Satellite Radio capabilities.

    What's Edmunds' Take?
With more power, more luxury and more safety, we only see this lineup of Escalades getting more popular. The line forms behind Diddy. — Josh Jacquot
