Internet on the Go: Cadillac to Offer Wireless in CTS

DETROIT — Cadillac's bestselling model, the CTS, will have the option for full in-car Internet beginning in April. Its provider, Autonet Mobile, will offer live demonstrations of the wireless system at the 2009 New York Auto Show. Any device like a laptop, phone or gaming system with WiFi will be able to connect inside the CTS.

The system utilizes a mobile router that allows users to transfer it from car to car, thanks to a new docking station. The CTS incorporates an internal WiFi antenna and is capable of speeds up to 800 kb per second. One passenger will be able to visit a favorite social networking or news site, while others battle friends in their favorite games.

"Consumers today are frequently searching for WiFi access wherever they may be. Adding WiFi is a natural extension of the tech features already inside the CTS, such as a 40-gigabyte hard drive with USB port, a pop-up navigation system featuring real-time traffic and weather forecasts and the exclusive ability to pause and rewind live radio," said Cadillac North America Vice President Mark McNabb.

The dealer-installed option will retail for $499. It also requires a monthly service plan that starts at $29 for 1GB of data.

Inside Line says: Autonet offers a cheaper alternative to the expensive wireless cards offered through your cell-phone carriers, although you have to be in your car to use it. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
