DETROIT — When Cadillac took the wraps off the redesigned 2008 CTS entry-level sedan on Monday, it was clear that the Detroit brand had thrown down the gauntlet in an assault on the Euro-lux competition.

For 2008, the CTS — which is bound for worldwide export in the fall — gets a 2-inch-wider track to fit its new optional all-wheel-drive system. It also gets a more rakish profile with a grille reminiscent of the one that dominated the face of the Cadillac Sixteen concept. Side air extractors forward of the front doors add to the car's appeal and the angular deck lid has the look of a high-performance spoiler.

The CTS gets a new 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 VVT engine with an estimated 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Two transmission choices are available: a six-speed manual or a Hydra-matic 6L50 automatic.

The cabin of the CTS goes upscale with cut-and-sew execution and an integrated center stack in satin metallic or wood finish. A 300-watt 10-speaker Bose stereo system is optional.

What this means to you: Cadillac takes a big step forward in its plan for world domination with the debut of the redesigned CTS.
