Nothing says "I've still got sack" like a 100-foot burnout in a supercharged, pushrod-powered American wagon loaded with a toddler, a stroller, a case of Huggies pull-ups and 2 gallons of organic reduced-fat milk. This, friends, is the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon.

Perhaps America’s only great automotive sin is the rejection of the station wagon. Burdened with the blight of being too big, too slow and too inefficient, the great V8-powered American wagons made their last showings in the late 70s and early 80s. They were replaced, perhaps even more sadly, with minivans and, ultimately, SUVs. But now, finally, Cadillac has resurrected the American Wagon. It’s been done with a car which will never, ever be called boring. And while Cadillac’s CTS-V Wagon might not be the most practical family vehicle on the planet, it offers a level of utility much greater than a sedan with little compromise in the performance relative to its insanely fast Coupe and Sedan brethren. Handling stats, too, are impressive. The Caddy slithers through our 600-ft slalom at 68.9 mph and circles the skidpad at .88g – numbers very, very close to those of the CTS-V Sedan. Not unlike the best wagon of yesteryear. This is a car that says you’re secure in your stance as a family man but refuse to give up your masculinity. And, oh yes, it’s a heck of a lot faster.

Why Americans are so turned off by wagons and hot hatches is beyond me. I get all the functionality of a SUV with our V70, return 30 mpg on the highway, and have significantly better handling than SUVs and CUVs.
