    • The Cadillac Converj is expected to be the luxury version of the Chevrolet Volt.
    • Converj has only appeared thus far as a concept vehicle.

DETROIT — Cadillac insists that rumors of the death of the Cadillac Converj are speculation and will not officially say if the companion vehicle to the Chevrolet Volt is dead or alive.

"It's neither on nor off," Cadillac spokesman Nick Twork told Inside Line on Wednesday. "I don't have a definitive answer one way or the other."

He added: "To say it's dead or alive would mean it was going to be a production car. The car is a concept. It's always been a concept. We've been actively studying it."

Speculation in automotive media centers on concerns that GM canceled the Converj because the automaker could not produce a hybrid on the Volt's platform that would be able to compete with rival luxury brands. With GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz — the Converj's leading champion — retiring on May 1, the Converj's future seems dim, according to reports.

"Once Lutz goes, the Converj has no patron," Inside Line suggested to Twork.

"I don't know about that," he replied. "We're continuing with the Volt. We believe in the technology. And we are looking at many things for the Cadillac portfolio in the future.

"If it [Converj] were dead, would you be able to say so?" Inside Line asked Twork.

"No," he said. "We want to have some mystery here. I know it's an old-fashioned idea in these days."

Tthey should come out with the converj in north america, and see how it does eco friendly or not it still looks sharp so it would sell.  The whole eco friendly crap is killing the auto industry any way.  The people want a car with power and you realy can't get that with alot of the hybrid cars, and only the damn hippies buy them so give it power and sell it.

I agree this is what GM needs.  High earners can be eco-friendly too.  Killing this would be to kill GM.  Chinese people like anything that is flashy and different.  I disagree with them not liking 2 door cars

GM shouldn't brought this car to China.. cuz no one likes two door car in China. Chinese only drive four-door sedans.

They should have introduced the Converj before the Volt, with a $40-50k price tag, to get the Hollywood eco-posers on board and subsidize the project.
