The engine features a new closed-loop control technology, which GM describes as a breakthrough in diesel combustion management. The clean-diesel engine will meet European standards through 2012. Currently, the only diesel Cadillac offers in Europe is a 1.9-liter system for its BLS sedan.
The engine has not been certified for the U.S. just yet, and there are no immediate plans to offer it here. But analysts say it is not out of the realm of possibility for the clean diesel — or elements of the clean diesel — to end up on GM's Lambda crossover vehicles in the near future. Those vehicles may include the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook.
Inside Line has learned that GM Powertrain is developing a new light-duty V8 CDI for broader use in its trucks and SUVs, starting in 2010. Its first use is expected to be in the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado. The dual-overhead-cam engine will displace about 4.5 liters and deliver 330-360 horsepower and 500-520 pound-feet of torque. It is aimed at vehicles with an under-8,500-pound gross vehicle weight.
The new compact V6 unveiled on Tuesday at the Geneva auto show makes 250 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque starting at 2,000 rpm. Both transverse and longitudinal configurations are planned, GM said. GM is partnering with Italian engine maker VM Motori, a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, on the project. VM Motori designed the base engine and will build the new unit in Cento, Italy. GM Powertrain developed the clean-combustion process, electronic engine control and exhaust gas after-treatment.
The advanced combustion control process eventually will be used on a new series of GM diesels. IL has learned that some aspects of the closed-loop system are also expected to be used in competitive engines.
Separately, BMW reaffirmed its U.S. diesel plans as the Geneva show kicked off this week. CEO Norbert Reithofer has reiterated BMW's plans to offer several diesel powertrains in some of its models sold in the U.S. next year. Specifics on which models will get the diesel powertrains were not disclosed.
What this means to you: Cadillac demonstrates a real commitment to Europe with the diesel engine announcement, while engineers back home are busy with diesel variants for the U.S.
