STUTTGART, Germany — A "design concept" of the first electric car from BYD Daimler New Technology will be introduced in April at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. The production version of the car is slated to reach the China market in 2013.
Joint-venture partners BYD Auto and Daimler AG plan to show the car's exterior and interior at the show, and will release more details about the venture, including its brand name and logo.
In a statement Monday, Daimler said the venture is "making good progress," with preproduction prototype work underway and supplier sourcing nearly complete.
The partners said they are tapping BYD's expertise in battery technology and e-drive systems and Daimler's know-how in electric vehicle architecture and safety.
The venture expects eventually to produce a range of compact to midsize EVs in Shenzhen, near the headquarters of BYD.
Inside Line says: With Daimler handling quality control, the venture could stand a much better chance of success against some China-only competitors.
