ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — General Motors on Thursday said it is adding the 2009 Buick Lucerne to its flex-fuel lineup. The alt-fuel version of the Lucerne can be selected as a no-cost option and can run on gasoline or E85 or any combination of the two.

The Lucerne thus has the distinction of becoming the first flex-fuel Buick passenger car, the automaker noted.

GM said the Lucerne will be among more than 15 of its models with flex-fuel capability for the 2009 model year, up from 11 models this year. Other vehicles include the four-cylinder Chevrolet HHR and the Hummer H2 and H2 SUT.

In a statement, GM described ethanol as a "cleaner-burning alternative fuel that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 23 percent compared with gasoline." However, critics of ethanol say its wider use is helping drive up the price of food in the U.S., as farmers divert production of corn for use as fuel.
