New Buick Crossover Christened "Enclave"

DETROIT — General Motors is racing to fill its lineup with hot crossover vehicles, including a new SUV that will be smaller than its Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, and Saturn Vue. The Detroit News said the automaker is considering the possible introduction of its first small, futuristic-looking Cadillac in the segment.

The Buick Enclave is the sister vehicle of the GMC Acadia crossover, a 2008 model, and the Saturn Outlook crossover, which is due to hit showrooms in fall 2006. The Enclave is due out in spring 2007. The Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary says "enclave" means "a group of people who are culturally, intellectually, or socially distinct from those surrounding them." The styling of the Enclave is inspired by that of the Buick Centieme concept.

GM vice chairman Robert Lutz said that GM would grow its crossover lineup from seven entries to 14 in the next four years. The new crossovers will primarily be powered by fuel-efficient four- or six-cylinder engines, but he added each "will be compatible" with versions of the company's hybrid gas-electric system under development.

GM estimates that crossovers will account for more than 2.5 million sales in the United States this year, and that figure could grow to 3.5 million units by 2010.

What this means to you: It's a crossover world, and GM wants to be a major player in it.

I hope you will produce a Buick crossover like the Enclave but smaller, like the Rendeaux was.  The Rendeaux was perfect in  width, length, all over size and comfort .  A five passenger SUV with all the same amenities would be really nice.  I would think that it would be a hot seller.  Not more than 6" of the ground would be an extra bonus.  The Enclave is really two high off the ground to get into easily, also way to big for the most of us.  So many of the compact (smaller SUV) are fine in length, but they cut 6" off the width, which is not acceptable, makes you feel like you are siting on your passenger.  Not comfortable, that is the only think I have against the compacts.  So, Buick needs to keep the width to make them elite and to keep the comfort of a Buick.
