Keating Unveils TKR and SKR Supercars
MANCHESTER, England — Keating Supercars has set its sights fairly high: Its new TKR supercar supposedly will offer an optional 1,500-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 that will outgun the Bugatti Veyron, according to the fledgling sports-car maker's initial propaganda wave.
Formally unveiled Wednesday in England, the TKR track car and its tamer roadgoing sibling, the SKR, will be built in extremely limited quantities and custom tailored to each buyer's individual specifications. Prices are expected to start at less than $200,000 for the SKR, with the first deliveries promised by year's end. The TKR is expected to follow in 2009.
The basic two-seater is constructed around a steel space frame — customers can also specify carbon fiber — with a choice of carbon fiber or fiberglass body panels. Curb weight of the base SKR is a modest 2,600 pounds. The full-carbon TKR is only 2,200 pounds.
The midengine design accommodates a Porsche five-speed transaxle driving the rear wheels and mated to a choice of General Motors V8s from the Corvette parts bin. The standard 6.0-liter unit that powers the SKR makes 404 horsepower, while the 7.0-liter unit is rated at 505 hp. Keating promises supercharged variants that will bump output to 650 hp and beyond, with an "ultimate" twin-turbocharged power plant earmarked for the TKR said to make an unheard-of 1,500 hp.
Even the standard SKR with normally aspirated 6.0-liter V8 will be quick, with 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 4.0 seconds and a top speed in excess of 180 mph.
