AMEILIA ISLAND, Florida — Gooding & Company will have goodies from Porsche, Bugatti and Alfa Romeo on the auction block March 12 during its inaugural Amelia Island Auction. Among the 70-plus vehicles on offer are a pair of Bugattis, a rare 1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder and a 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C2500 SS.
A 1928 Bugatti Type 35C Grand Prix, painted French racing blue, is expected to fetch at least $1 million. It's joined by a 1932 Bugatti Type 50 Cabriolet that was recently restored and shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. It is estimated to sell for $1.1 million to $1.5 million.
Another gem: a 1961 Porsche RS61 Spyder, one of only 14 built, that was originally raced by Porsche works driver Bob Holbert. The Spyder notched a dozen wins between 1961 and 1963. It has since been featured at a variety of vintage racing events and is expected to sell for at least $1.2 million.
Gooding & Company will also be auctioning a 1939 Alfa Romeo 6C2500 SS. It's about as close as one can get to acquiring the Tipo 256 that raced in Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, the auction house says, and it's expected to fetch $800,000 or more.
Other vehicles present at the auction will be a 1931 Voisin C20 "Mylord" Demi-Berline and a 1938 Peugeot Darl'Mat Roadster.
The auction takes place starting at 5:00 p.m. on March 12 on the grounds of the Amelia Island Plantation. Details are at Gooding's Web site.
