2009 Detroit Auto Show: Chinese Automaker Brilliance Won't Commit To U.S. Launch

DETROIT — China's Brilliance Auto, which displayed at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, marking its first appearance in the Motor City, is remaining mum about when it will launch its vehicles in the United States.

Unlike its home-market competitor BYD, which also appeared at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, Brilliance told reporters that it is here solely on an extended fact-finding mission. BYD said Monday it plans to enter the U.S. market in 2011 with a lineup of electric and plug-in hybrids.

Brilliance showed off four models in Detroit, including the M1 and the FRV C-segment hatchback, both of which were styled by Giugiaro.

Brilliance exported about 23,000 vehicles in 2008, mainly to emerging markets such as Russia and Egypt.

Inside Line says: Americans, don't expect to be able to get your hands on a Brilliance any time soon. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
