    BMW xActivity - Front

An aggressive front fascia signals the xActivity's all-purpose intent. The 18-inch wheels are shod with high-performance street rubber but their design leaves something to be desired. | September 15, 2009

    What Is It?

    What's Special About It?
The xActivity is BMW's take on the ever-expanding segment of small, sporty utility vehicles that cater to outdoor adventure-minded drivers. With similar proportions to BMW's X5 sport-ute, the xActivity blends a taut, aggressive stance with a unique roof structure to give it an athletic but fun presence.

In order to give the xActivity concept adequate structural strength while still allowing for a sun-drenched passenger compartment, BMW engineers maintained the vehicle's roof rails from front to back while removing the traditional B- and C-pillars as well as the entire center roof section. The result is an open-air convertible-type vehicle that still has enough internal structural strength to function as a true sport-utility vehicle.

The interior is designed for maximum functionality and simplicity. A rear-loading system in the cargo bay automatically slides out when the tailgate is opened for easier loading and unloading while the interior climate control system can be controlled through a single button. An elevated seating position affords a clear view of the road ahead despite the vehicle's smaller stature and pressure-sensitive seat cushions

    Why Should You Care?
The xActivity may look like an outlandish concept vehicle but it's really just a roofless version of the X3 compact sport-utility that BMW is readying for production later this year. Built on the same platform as the 3 Series sedan, the X3 will share all major drivetrain and suspension components with its sedan and coupe siblings. — Ed Hellwig
