2009 BMW X6 It’s not necessity that created the 2009 BMW X6, it’s want. As in, “I want an SUV that drives like a car and looks like one too.” It’s a tall order, and although BMW got close with the X5, it’s even closer to hitting the mark with the new 2009 X6. Built on the same chassis as the X5, the new X6 is an even more aggressively styled SUV that gives up a little utility to add some sport. You can see it in the low roof that gives this SUV its distinctive shape. And you can feel it when you lay into the new 400hp, twin turbo V8 found in the top-of-the-line X50i model. BMW says the X50i can get from 0 to 60mph in just 5.3 seconds. That’s not only quick for an SUV, it’s quick for just about any vehicle. All wheel drive is standard along with a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also a new system called Dynamic Performance Control. BMW says it’s able to more precisely modulate power to each individual wheel for improved cornering control. Standard 19-inch wheels and tires help with the grip too, and like every BMW there’s an electronic stability control system. Since the X6 emphasizes the “sport” part of sport utility, it’s setup for a driver and three passengers only. Headroom in back is slightly compromised, but adults can still sit comfortably. There’s not much in the way of cargo room either, so if you’re considering the X6 as your weekend getaway car, you better travel light. So what exactly is the X6’s appeal? There’s no doubt it’s one of the best handling SUVs out there, but is it really an SUV? Not really. The X6 is really more like an all-wheel drive car with a really good view from the driver’s seat. It’s no more functional on the inside than a car, and although it handles well, most sedans are still more agile. Then again, maybe BMW is hoping it will sell on looks alone. We’d say – don’t count on it.
