WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — BMW has face-lifted the X5 for model year 2011, adding new engines, and will put the new crossover on sale in the U.S. shortly after its debut in early April at the 2010 New York Auto Show.

The 2011 X5 will come in three flavors for the U.S.: the familiar xDrive35d turbodiesel, plus the new xDrive35i and xDrive50i.

The range-topping X5 xDrive50i features a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 from the X6, delivering 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, mated to a new eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW quotes 0-60-mph acceleration in 5.3 seconds. Prices will start at $59,275.

The X5 xDrive35i gets a new single-turbo 3.0-liter direct-injection inline six-cylinder engine rated at 300 hp. Fitted with an eight-speed automatic, the car will sprint from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Prices will start at $46,675.

The X5 xDrive35d gets no significant powertrain changes for 2011. Prices start at $52,175.

The X5 also gets a modest face-lift for 2011, including updated bumpers, headlamps, taillamps, foglamps, air intakes and rear apron, plus new colors.

New options for 2011 include Lane Departure Warning and Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go.

Real men might not drive an X 5 but old men like me do.  Like the car hate the navigation system.   Probability of Success for finding an address is .5 or less also the HD portion of the radio echos (i.e. you get both signals slightly out of phase.)  Other than that the car is great.  Good visibility comfortable seats (got the multi contour like the 7 series).  The diesel has plenty of power and I am getting 30 highway and 23 around town.

If I were going to buy a 3 series for 42... this thing would seem like a bargain.

Soooooo the X5 in the second image definitely says xDrive40d on the side...Euro model?  Or different engine than the current 3.0 twin-turbo diesel?

Yeah, those fogs look odd ... kinda like a European Ford S-Max. Dislike.

I really like the "old" NA V8s in the top spec 5s and X5, they sounded pretty amazing. I appreciate what BMW is doing with turbos, but they're a brand that I just don't associate with them, a la Saab, Volvo and Audi. Guess they're here to stay, though.

It is about time they put the Turbo I6 in the X5.
