WASHINGTON — BMW is recalling 2,120 2009 X5 xDrive 35ds equipped with the diesel engine because the fuel filter heater could overheat, possibly leading to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated," said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. "The fuel filter heater could remain activated even when the ignition is off and lead to a dead battery. The unit could also overheat, possibly leading to a vehicle fire."

In other documentation filed with the federal government, BMW said it had received 25 reports related to the defect.

"BMW has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue," the automaker told NHTSA.

BMW dealers will replace the fuel filter heater on the affected vehicles. The vehicles were built from October 2, 1008 through June 12, 2009. The recall is expected to begin in October.

Owners can contact BMW at (800) 525-7417.

BMW has always sit at the bottom of the JD Power quality survey.  Yes, MB and Audi are surpassing them.  A BMW dealer once told me that the water pump on all BMWs last about 35,000 miles only!!  I left and never bothered.

Mmmmhh..... This is only what? The 17th recall from BMW this year?

With the amount of 'nickle and dime' that BMW charges, their cars should be more robust.

Are MB and Audi starting to pass BMW now...?
