2009 BMW X5 and X6 Recalled for Brake Problem

WASHINGTON — BMW is recalling an unspecified number of 2009 X5 and X6 vehicles because faulty rear brake discs could result in a loss of braking, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The rear brake discs may not have been manufactured according to specifications," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "As a result, a reduction in braking performance at the affected rear wheel could occur.

"In an extreme case, the affected rear brake disc could break, resulting in a loss of braking at that wheel, increasing stopping distances and the risk of a crash."

In what may be a frustrating turn of events for consumers, BMW has not yet provided the federal government with a remedy for the problem or a notification schedule for the recall. However, owners can contact BMW at (800) 831-1117.

Inside Line says: If you own a 2009 BMW X5 or X6, you may want to give BMW a call ASAP. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
