    What Is It?
    2004 BMW X5

    What's Special About It?
Four years after its launch, BMW makes over its X5 lineup, giving the SUV more engine choices and a bolder new look. All models receive a new all-wheel-drive system called xDrive, as well as an exterior makeover that parallels BMW's recent changes to its 7 Series and 5 Series sedans, with interchanging convex and concave surfaces. More pronounced hood lines, a larger grille and a new headlamp arrangement give the X5 a more aggressive look.

The entry-level X5 3.0i receives a new standard six-speed manual transmission, while the upscale 4.4i model gets a boost in power thanks to a new engine. It now uses the same V8 found in the 7 Series sedan with 315 horsepower and a new six-speed automatic.

Previously the top-of-the-line trim, the X5 4.6i, has been replaced by the X5 4.8is model which includes a V8 that cranks out 360 hp. The 4.8is is also set apart from its SUV siblings by exterior distinctions like an exclusive front air dam and unique colors. The 4.8is is a late arrival, expected to go on sale in spring 2004, while the other models will hit the U.S. showrooms in mid-October.

    Why Should You Care?
If you're a fan of the current X5, and you've already learned to accept the styling changes BMW has rolled out previously on its redesigned 2002 and 2003 models, then the new X5 shouldn't disappoint. With changes limited to more power and a few new options, old fans should remain loyal. — Kelly Stennick
