2002 BMW X5 4.6is
What's special about it?
BMW has debuted a high-performance version of its popular X5 SAV (sport activity vehicle) called the X5 4.6is, designed to take on the Mercedes-Benz ML55 head-on with added power, handling and performance.
A 4.6-liter V8, based on the current X5's 4.4-liter motor, makes 347 horsepower and 354 ft-lbs. of torque in European trim. The run from rest to 60 mph is estimated to take less than 6.5 seconds, and the top speed of this uber ute is 149 mph. BMW says the gains in power stem from the increased displacement of the engine, as well as improvements to the induction and exhaust systems.
Helping launch the X5 4.6is is a five-speed Steptronic automanual transmission that gets more aggressive, sportier shifting than other X5 models. Dynamic Stability Control (which helps control skids), is, of course, standard, along with All Season Traction (which helps control wheelslip), Hill Descent Control (which helps control speed on steep descents) and Dynamic Brake Control (which helps apply maximum brake pressure during a panic stop).
Standard 20-inch wheels, xenon headlights, exclusive colors and body-color exterior trim set the 4.6is apart from lesser X5 models. Special interiors are also unique to the 4.6is, with sport seats, Nappa/Alcantara upholstery, and lots of black trim decorating the cabin.
Why should you care?
The 4.6is arrives in fall 2001, and if you've got the $$$ to drop on the 4.4i, you might want to wait for this better performing, and more exclusive, X5 model.
