Tuner Special: Hartge Hunter

MERZIG, Germany — Herbert Hartge has been tweaking BMWs for what seems like forever, usually to make them go quicker and faster. Now, Hartge has focused its tuning skills in another direction: beefing up the X3's off-road capability.

Hartge's Hunter off-road suspension kit hikes ride height by 0.8 inch, and there are two different 18-inch all-terrain wheel/tire combinations offered. The package also includes automatic front and rear differential locks and stainless-steel underbody guards for the engine, gearbox, prop shaft, diffs, exhaust system and fuel tank.

Engine upgrades take the X3 3.0d up to 253 horsepower and 422 pound-feet of torque and the X3 3.0sd up to 335 hp and 498 lb-ft of torque.

Continuing the outdoorsy theme, Hartge fits a sport steering wheel trimmed in green leather and maple, a speedo with a green dial and even green carpeting and trunk mat. Yes, there's even a tub in the cargo bay to carry freshly slaughtered game.

The tuner says it is also working on an off-road upgrade for the larger X5.

What this means to you: Hartge says the Hunter is intended for "hunting, farming and forestry, and everyone who enjoys driving over difficult terrain." As John Denver once put it in song, "Thank God I'm a country boy." — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
