FRANKFURT, Germany — AC Schnitzer can never leave well enough alone, thank heaven. Its latest foray into automotive overkill is the ACS5 Sport Touring, an "upgrade" of the BMW M5 wagon, now on display at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

How potent is the ACS5? It delivers a staggering 110 horsepower per liter — 552 hp in total from BMW's mighty 5.0-liter V10, after all the modifications. The tuning pack includes a reprogrammed engine control unit, a new exhaust manifold, free-flow mufflers with sport catalysts and chrome tailpipes. Top speed is estimated at 199 mph, which makes the ACS5 one of the fastest family haulers on the planet.

Mechanical upgrades have been performed on the brakes and suspension, including the adaptation of performance springs and an aluminum strut brace in front. The car rides on Schnitzer's 20-inch Type VI forged alloy wheels (21s are optional). Buyers can choose from 30- or 35-series performance tires.

The aero bodywork includes a carbon front spoiler, chrome grille, rear skirt with carbon diffuser and rear roof spoiler.

Customers can order the cabin trimmed in carbon fiber with a "sports titanium" finish, right down to the iDrive controller. Aluminum pedals and handbrake lever are optional.
