BMW introduced its latest and greatest M car to date, the M5 sedan. With 400 horsepower and 395 ft-lbs of torque emanating from its 32-valve 5-liter V8, the M5 will be the most powerful BMW road car ever, and quite possibly the most powerful sedan on the road. Features like Double Vanos valve timing, electronic throttle control, and a variable redline that changes as the car warms up, all contribute to the M5's advanced technical pedigree.
Outside, the M5 is distinguished from other 5-series sedans by a re-styled front air dam incorporating a large air scoop and oval fog lamps. Quad tailpipes and 18-inch wheels round out the M5's appearance.
Inside are leather-covered sports seats with a contrasting color scheme and plenty of side-bolster support. Buyers can opt for either the "Sport" interior with brushed aluminum dash and door panel inserts or the "Exclusive" interior that features burl walnut trim. A nice touch is the illuminated manual gearbox that displays the double-H shift pattern of the six-speed, even in the dark.
Claims of 5-second zero-to-60 times and 1G lateral grip should keep M5s from sitting on dealer lots for long, even with a $70,000-plus price tag. Production will begin in September of '99 with the first U.S. models available about a month later.
