What is it?
2001 BMW M3 Coupe
What's special about it?
The 343-horsepower M3 should re-assert itself as the standard by which all other performance coupes are judged. While similar to the silver M3 show car that appeared at Frankfurt last fall, this yellow one is the full- production version that will go on sale later this year. Aside from the obvious visual clues, such as the flared fenders, lower side skirts and large front air dam, the new M3 will have an aluminum hood, 18-inch wheels and optional electrically folding exterior mirrors. Inside are newly developed sport seats with a wide range of adjustments, including the option to increase the width of the backrests. Like the M5 sedan, the new M3 will feature a variable pre-warming field in the tachometer. A multi-function sports steering wheel and door cutouts strips the unique interior touches. Three different styles of interior material are available to buyers: a combination of fabric and leather, a combination of leather and Alcantara, or an all-leather design. Acceleration numbers with the six-speed- equipped coupe should be in the low five-second range when going from zero to 60 mph. An advanced differential lock will work to maximize rear-wheel traction under full-throttle blasts, while a switch on the dash will allow the driver to set engine response to either the Sporting or Comfort mode.
Why should you care?
The M3 has been an icon in the performance car world since the late 1980's. The latest model has over 100 more horsepower than the ´99 M3, and that was already a powerful and thrilling ride. Despite its having a rear seat, you can expect the 2001 M3 to be one of the most capable performance cars on the planet.
