EL MIRAGE DRY LAKE BED, California — Tattoo-laden TV personality and custom-vehicle builder Jesse James, 40, beat the land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle on Tuesday in the Mojave Desert, according to a statement on Spike TV.

The star of the Spike TV show Jesse James Is a Dead Man reached 199.7 mph while filming the season finale. The show will premiere on August 9 at 10 p.m. ET. The daredevil's time was documented by the Southern California Timing Association and beat the previous record-holder, the BMW H2R, which had taken the land-speed record for an H2 car of 185 mph.

"Jesse prepared for a worst-case-scenario situation by escaping from a burning fuselage, narrowly avoiding injury and testing his mettle to the limit," according to a statement by Spike TV.

Few details were given about the vehicle, except that it was developed with the help of land speed racer Mike Cook and "engine wizard" Kurt Urban. It was described as an emission-free vehicle with a "breathable exhaust."

James, who started West Coast Choppers and claims to be related to the outlaw Jesse James, starred in the hit TV show Monster Garage on the Discovery Channel. He is married to actress Sandra Bullock.

Ryan Reynolds, who stars with Bullock in the upcoming film The Proposal, said in the June 22 issue of People magazine that "every guy alive has a man-crush on Jesse."

When Bullock was asked if she felt threatened by that, she responded: "I'm very masculine myself. I have a man-crush on my husband. So I'm okay with it."

Inside Line says: Sounds like a must-watch for anybody with a man-crush on Jesse. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
