    • BMW unveiled the Concept Gran Coupe in Beijing.
    • The four-door coupe is said to preview the future BMW 6 Series.
    • No technical data was released for the Concept Gran Coupe.

BEIJING — BMW's Concept Gran Coupe joins the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show in previewing the next generation of German "four-door coupes." In the case of BMW, the Concept Gran Coupe reportedly previews the successor to the 6 Series, which is expected to include a coupe-like four-door very much in the mold of this so-called "concept study."

BMW declined to provide any technical details on the car, other than to say it has a stretched wheelbase, sits lower than the 5 Series and 7 Series sedans and is fitted with LED headlamps and taillamps.

Frameless door glass gives the vehicle a sleek appearance in side profile, and flared wheel arches and quad exhaust pipes hint at its sporting bent.

Inside Line says: European media reports say BMW intends to market a production version of the concept as the 6 Series Gran Coupe to pit against the next-generation Mercedes CLS. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

Attactive car, however 6 series have traditionally been 2 doors and should continue to be so. It would make more sense for this to be a(nother) 5 series offshoot.
