2007 Frankfurt Auto Show: Alpina B6 S

FRANKFURT, Germany — Alpina knows best how to milk the maximum potential from BMWs. The evidence can be seen in the tuner's new B6 S versions of the 6 Series coupe and cabrio, now on display at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

By fitting a so-called radial compressor, which Alpina describes as a combination of turbocharger and supercharger, the DOHC 4.4-liter V8 is nudged to 530 horsepower and 535 pound-feet of torque. All that power is fed to the rear wheels through a modified ZF six-speed automatic gearbox with Alpina Switch-tronic clutchless manual shift capability.

The results are impressive. The B6 S coupe sprints from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 198 mph, while the B6 S cabrio does the 0-60-mph run in under 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 194 mph.

The mechanical underpinnings have been massaged in typical Alpina fashion. The B6 S gets an electronically controlled adjustable damping system, jointly developed with Sachs. The driver can manually select firmer damper settings via a button on the center console. There are also enhanced brakes and heavier stabilizer bars. The car rides on 20-inch wheels and tires.

Aerodynamic improvements include a lightweight carbon-fiber hood with integral air outlets.

What this means to you: The B6 S bumps the 6 Series performance bar a tad higher.
