A Look at the 2010 BMW 7 Series

As the first major redesign of the 7 Series since its controversial restyling in 2002, the 2010 BMW 7 Series will either reinforce the current theme or abandon it altogether. From the look of these prototypes caught testing in Death Valley, California, the big rear end stays.

These early test mules might be covered in camouflage, but the overall shape and size of the car is still visible. It doesn't appear considerably bigger than the current 7 Series, but the wheelbase is expected to grow an inch or so to open up more passenger space. There will be a long-wheelbase version as well, and it may get a few unique styling details to put a little distance between it and the standard model.

Both versions of the 2010 7 Series will be powered by a new twin-turbo V8. We've heard it will displace around 4.0 liters, but it's hard to tell if it's a version of the 4.0-liter V8 used in the new M3. Regardless of which V8 is used, an output of more than 400 horsepower is a good bet, as the current engine already makes 360 horses while the M3's V8 pumps out 415. A six-speed automatic transmission will continue to send the power to the rear wheels.

From what we can see of the interior, this 7 Series has a layout similar to the current model. Big analog gauges are used in the instrument cluster and there's a sizable information screen front and center on the dash. The rest of the details are covered in camouflage, but expect to see plenty of high-tech features that will look good in a brochure despite their limited usefulness.

Production of the 2010 BMW 7 Series is projected to start in late 2008 or early 2009. European markets are likely to get it first, so if you're looking to upgrade to this Bavarian flagship you'll probably have to wait until the middle of '09 to buy it in the U.S.
