Alpina Returns to Racing

    0 Ratings
BUCHLOE, Germany — Alpina, a German manufacturer of racecars and performance road cars, is returning to racing after a 20-year break.

Alpina has announced plans to enter the FIA GT3 European Championship and other major endurance races with a version of the BMW Alpina B6S. The B6S is based on BMW's 6 Series and makes 530 horsepower and 535 pound-feet of torque from Alpina's 4.4-liter supercharged V8. The GT3 series is made up of 10 manufacturers and multiple national championships. The European Championship races typically have 45 cars on the starting grids.

During its previous racing stint, Alpina racked up several victories in the European Touring Car Championships and the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

For more than 40 years, Alpina has manufactured high-performance cars based on BMW vehicles. Despite the close connection to BMW vehicles, the company is considered a manufacturer rather than a tuner.

What this means to you: Alpina rejoins the long list of manufacturers that use experience in racing to market their cars and improve technology in their production vehicles. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
