2004 BMW 6 Series
What's Special About It?
Returning to the lineup after a nearly 15-year absence, the 6 Series coupe is back in a big way. Regardless of whether you like the dramatic styling or not, its performance isn't likely to leave any room for complaints. The standard 4.4-liter V8 engine delivers 325 horsepower that can propel the big coupe to 60 mph in less than six seconds, according to BMW. Three different transmissions allow you to choose varying levels of performance and driving effort. There's a six-speed manual for do-it-yourself enthusiasts, a six-speed automatic for those who don't really care how the shifts get done and a six-speed paddle Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) for those who can't make up their minds either way.
Like the new-for-2004 5 Series upon which it's based, the 645i will feature a vast array of electronic controls to maintain optimal stability and safety. BMW's Active Roll Stabilization nearly eliminates body sway during hard cornering and an optional Active Steering system can vary the steering ratio to deliver precise road feel in twisty canyons and minimal effort in parking lots and is unique to BMW. Other notable options include active headlights that turn with the curve of the road, a head-up display that projects vehicle information onto the windshield and active cruise control that automatically maintains a preset distance from approaching cars. The 6 Series will go on sale next spring along with a convertible that will make its debut early next year.
Why Should You Care?
Athletic luxury coupes are few and far between, so when the premier manufacturer of performance vehicles decides to get back in the game it's worth noting. The styling doesn't hold our attention quite like the original, there's little doubt that it will be one of the most satisfying coupes on the road from behind the wheel. Once upon a time we would have expected both. Ed Hellwig
