DETROIT — The 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5 will start at $61,845 when it goes on sale in late spring, the automaker announced on Monday at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The price includes an $895 destination charge.
The pricing reflects an $8,720 premium over the base BMW 535i sedan, on which the ActiveHybrid 5 is based. The BMW 535i starts at $53,125, including an $875 destination charge. The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is $7,250 more expensive than one of its chief competitors, the 2012 Infiniti M35h, which will go on sale in the spring starting at $54,595. The price includes an $895 destination charge.
The EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers on the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, a critical piece of information for buyers mulling over the new hybrid.
The AAA Daily Fuel Gauge on Monday said the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in the U.S. stood at $3.37 versus $3.08 a year ago.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 combines BMW's 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine with an electric drive system, a lithium-ion battery pack and an eight-speed automatic transmission for a combined output of 335 horsepower. BMW says the ActiveHybrid 5 can be driven on battery power alone at speeds up to 37 mph for distances of up to 2.5 miles.
The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 was sold briefly in the U.S., then dropped last fall because of lack of demand.
Also making its debut this week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show is the 2013 Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid. Pricing has not been announced yet.
Inside Line says: Only the greenest BMW buyers are likely to pop for the ActiveHybrid 5 at that price.

Interesting how the local Japanese car troll (blackdynamite1) slams this car because of his unexplainable hate for BMW or anything German for that matter.
Let's take this same press release and replaced "BMW" with the word "Lexus" and the fact that no EPA mileage figures have been posted.
What would blackdynamite1 do?
Our little troll would immediatly proclaim the superiority of this car and claim that'll it get the best fuel economy in its class by far while handling like a true sports car. Yep, that's what he would do. Just like he does on Autospies and Lexus Enthusiast (you're easy to find, blackdynamite1).
I can't take you seriously. You have what? Three or four posts in this section and they're all negative about the car in question. Yet in the LF-LC thread you're singing like a castrated church boy about how that car is for "players, not poseurs".
You're fanboyism, bias and blindness for Lexus and hate for anything European is bordering on mental instability in my opinion.

BMW can't get idiot lights to shut off on the dash. Now they are building complex hybrids.
You might turn the seat heater on in this thing and get electrocuted.

PS: Could you imagine the potential maintenance costs for a BMW [Hybrid]?! Lord have mercy on us all!

i think that is the perfect price for it because it refelcts the amount of work from the 3 series to the 7 in the middle

BMW's Hybrid Is Quite Lame.
According to Wikipadie, "A defining feature of the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is its Two-Mode active transmission, an innovative technology that controls the interplay of the electrical motors and the internal combustion engine" * and BMW 5 series active Hubrid is about "The use of BMW ActiveHybrid technology allows the hybrid electric version to reduce both fuel consumption and emissions by more than 10%"**.
Compared to those of Pruise and Volvo, it seems BMW's hybrid is a much inferior & ineffective hybrid system, which only saves 10% of fuel and uses a mechanical "Two-Mode active transmission". Pruis reachs 50mpg, while Volvo claims around 125mpg for diesel hybrid v60 wagon and 50 for gas hybrid XC 60 SUV.
What's more, Volvo's hybrid has 3 independent-source-powered drives, 2 rear wheel hubed motors and 1 frontal gas/diesel engine, which is far much better than BMW's mechanically complicated & rigid single-source-powered hybrid in terms of driving dynamicis and responsiveness.

the 66k starting price kind've negates the $100 per month that you'd save on fuel. its just for show. they should put a hybrid combo in a mini or diesel 3 series

I'd get a Tesla Model S over all of these

I simply stated that there is little benefit in buying the hybrid 5 over the gas-engine 535i. The savings on gas is pretty much moot once you factor in a moderately loaded 5 series hybrid against a comparable 535i. It's pretty much a wash, just like with folks buying a Prius instead of Corrolla.
BMW has the right to charge whatever people will pay, but I just don't see the benefit within their own lineup longterm.
