2011 BMW 5 Series: Priced

    Just the Facts:
    • The 2011 BMW 5 Series will start at $50,475.
    • New pricing means a price cut of $1,450 from the 2010 535i.
    • Packages and individual options have been completely revamped.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — The 2011 BMW 5 Series will start at $50,475 for the 535i and $60,575 for the 550i when the sedans go on sale in June, reflecting a price cut versus the 2010 models. Pricing includes an $875 destination charge.

The 2010 BMW 535i starts at $51,925, including shipping. The 2010 BMW 550i starts at $61,475, including shipping. That means the new 535i is $1,450 less than the 2010 model and the 2011 550i is $900 less than the 2010 model.

A key question has been just how much BMW will charge for the Sport package for the 2011 5 Series sedan. In an interesting new pricing tactic, the German automaker is pricing the Dynamic Handling package and the Sport package as two separate options. For 2011, the Sport package will add an extra $2,200 to the bottom line of each vehicle, while the Dynamic Handling package adds $2,700. The $4,900 price tag for those two key options is a bit more than the $4,500 charge predicted by most observers.

There are more than two dozen packages and stand-alone options offered on the 2011 5 Series sedan. Expect to pay an extra $2,950 for the Active Ventilated Seat package and $1,050 for the Cold-Weather package, for example. Metallic paint adds another $550.

The pricing on the 2011 BMW 5 Series puts it fairly well in line with such competitors as the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the 2010 Jaguar XF. The E-Class starts at $49,475, including an $875 destination charge, while the XF starts at $52,000, including an $850 destination charge.

    The 2011 BMW 535i gets the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, while the 550i gets the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8.

BMW is worth every penny if you look at all the engineering achievements in the car.
The engine, transmission, steering (new integral active steering), fit and finish.
It's not their fault that they can't bring lower and economical versions of their line-up to the States. All Americans want in their car is a V8. how stupid.....

I remember when buying my old car, a 2003 325i, I debated between buying that and a base 525 only to find the price difference as minor. Now, it seems like the gap between the two will be well over $10,000.

Though the price is comparable with other companies, BMW does nickel and dime you for everything. How God's Sake, give me Heated Seats as a standard feature for $50,000 - Audi Does. For that matter, don't charge me for Floor Mats either!
