WASHINGTON — BMW is recalling 241,000 2002-'05 3 Series cars in the U.S. to fix defective rear lights, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    The affected vehicles include the 2002-'05 BMW 325i, 325xi, 330i and 330xi.

"Over time, resistance in the electrical contacts may cause one or more rear lamp functions (taillight, brake light and/or turn signal) within the vehicle's body panel to stop working," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions. This could cause a vehicle crash without warning."

In other documentation filed with the federal government, BMW said it "has not received any reports, nor is BMW otherwise aware, of any accidents or injuries related to this issue."

BMW dealers will make the necessary repairs on the affected vehicles. The recall is expected to begin in October. Owners can contact BMW at (800) 525-7417.

Inside Line says: If you own one of the aforementioned BMW 3 Series cars, be aware that a recall is in the works.

Beware that the recall does not include the tail light bulb holder which often gets partially melted because of this electrical problem. I had the issue fixed before the recall and BMW refused to reimburse me the $39.32 for the replacement bulb holder which was melted beyond repair. Shame on them!

No offense, but that's why you get a 6MT M3 not a SMG.  anything that uses a hydraulic pump is asking for failure at some point, it's expected.

Ugh, typical BMW...not recalling enough of the vehicles.  This same problem has happened on both of my E46 3 series coupes...my old 2000 328Ci and my current 2004 M3.

Now if they would only recall that stupid SMG II pump failures....

Same old story... Government Motors gets bailed out by the taxpayer and keeps building the same trashy cars.  I, for one, want my money back!  What's that?  Oh, sorry."

OMG STFU!!! This is about BMW, not GM. I have an easy solution for you. Don't buy any vehicle from Chrysler or GM. You have MORE than enough choices. At least this situation is being fixed for the BMW owners. Jeez too much complainin, just be happy for once, life is WAY too short for BS.
