The 2007 BMW 3 Series coupe has been spotted in various levels of camouflage over the last year, but these are the best shots yet of the 2007 BMW 3 Series convertible. At first glance this looks like just another coupe prototype, but look closer and you can clearly see several cutlines that indicate this is in fact a hardtop convertible. From the looks of this prototype, the 2007 BMW 330Ci convertible will use a three-piece top similar to the 2007 Volvo C70. If it's anything like Volvo's system, the 3 Series drop top will provide decent luggage space even with the top down.

BMW's switch to a hardtop design follows on the heels of not only the Volvo C70, but also the 2007 Volkswagen Eos which uses a similar hardtop system. Such systems are becoming increasingly popular as they not only maintain a more coupe like profile with the top up, they're safer and more weather resistant than traditional soft tops.

Although these prototypes look ready for production, their arrival in the States could be a long way off. With the debut of the standard coupe expected at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring, the debut of the convertible could be held until the fall of 2006. That could push its U.S. on-sale date all the way into 2007, but we wouldn't be surprised if BMW pushes everything forward a little to get this convertible out late next summer to keep it competitive with its new rivals.
