LONDON — The BMW 1 Series and 3 Series London 2012 Performance Editions have debuted in the United Kingdom, just in time to celebrate the German automaker's sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
BMW said it intends to maintain a high profile at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, deploying a fleet of diesel cars, hybrids and electric vehicles, as well as bicycles and motorcycles to ferry athletes and others.
The BMW 1 Series London 2012 Performance Edition gets London 2012 exterior badges, dark chrome 18-inch M light alloy wheels and an M Sport Suspension. Other goodies include M aerodynamic body styling, dark chrome exhaust tailpipe and dark line rear lights. The cabin gets sport seats with Royal Blue stitching, M Sport multi-function leather steering wheel and gearshift lever and floor mats with Royal Blue piping. Prices for the special model start at the U.S. equivalent of $30,992.
The BMW 3 Series London 2012 Performance Edition gets an M aerodynamic body kit, London 2012 exterior badges and an M sport multifunction leather steering wheel. It also gets sport seats, floor mats with blue piping, 18-inch light alloy wheels and a chrome exhaust finisher. Prices for the special model start at the U.S. equivalent of $36,806.
The special models are on sale now in the U.K.
Inside Line says: Too bad that New York City didn't win its bid to host the 2012 Olympics or we'd likely be getting some BMW special models to celebrate in the Big Apple.

OK....
How does a weak dollar change the price of a car that is priced in pounds sterling initially then converted to USD??? That should take our "weak" currency into account.
Either way - this looks like the base 318i, go to the UK BMW website and you'll see apples to apples we are MUCH cheaper for BMWs - the UK base 335i is ~$59,000 when you convert to USD and here it is $42,000. US $17,000 cheaper. In fact a base M3 here costs what a 335i is there with today's exchange rates.
Probably because, as we all know, the US has a lower tax rate than any European country.

@aston_dbs: Indeed, this offer may seem confusing considering the new 3 Series being right around the corner, but because of that there will be plenty of people lining up to buy the past year's model at a lower price. The more options they can offer on those older models, the easier they'll be able to sell them, and likely for a higher price.
$36k with the M Sport Kit is indeed cheaper there than it would be sold in the U.S. I would imagine this is due to shipping costs being lower for parts and full cars from Germany to Britain than from Germany to the U.S., the U.S. dollar being weak right now compared to the stronger British pound, and maybe even having something to do with differences in tariffs on imports.

Uh this article does not mention the POWERTRAINS.........might be relevant in a story about a "Performance Edition".......hello McFly?
I agree Rod. ........I am so tired of seeing the word "performance" put on something that amounts to tires /wheels and badging........I feel I am back in the 70's. BTW -and please say hi to Maggie for me.
