Unveiled: BMW 1 Series Convertible

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — BMW of North America said the 128i convertible will join the new1 Series coupe in U.S. showrooms next spring, to be followed later in 2008 by an even more potent 135i convertible.
The 128i convertible will feature BMW's familiar 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The 135i convertible kicks things up a notch, with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six returning 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. BMW says the latter model will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 5.6 seconds, with top speed limited to 155 mph.
The power soft top on the 1 Series convertible can be raised or lowered in 22 seconds, at speeds up to 25 mph. The standard top is available is available in black or taupe, with a fancy Moonlight Black version with interwoven metallic fibers offered as an extra-cost option.
BMW will announce prices closer to the on-sale dates.
