LONDON — The Bentley Mulsanne, frozen in time and space in a show-stopping Perspex and walnut sculpture, is one of several intriguing pieces of art inspired by the British marque. The "Timeless Mulsanne" sculpture is one of 40 pieces of artwork contributed by Bentley Motors for an art auction to benefit a Manchester cancer hospital.
Online bidding for the Bentley artwork has already started. A film of the various pieces can be viewed online.
The auction is a fascinating look at how artists use Bentley as a jumping-off point for creative endeavors. The Mulsanne in particular seems to strike a chord with painters and sculptors. Raul Pires' painting of the Mulsanne is said to capture the automobile as sculpture. Dirk van Braeckel, Bentley head designer, contributed the "Bloodline of Bentley" piece that he says includes the Mulsanne and shows off the "passion for the brand."
Jacob Annermaim's "Mother Gun" pays tribute to a vintage Bentley racing car using a digital painting technique. The artist says it was inspired by Woolf Barnato, who co-piloted the car in the 1928 24 Hours of Le Mans. Artist Dominic Najafi whimsically entitled his work "Meet the Family," a dream collection of Bentleys.
Online bidding will end on December 1, and the highest bids will be transferred to the Bonhams' auction room. Money from the auction will benefit The Christie Hospital in Manchester.
Inside Line says: A must-see virtual art gallery for anyone who has an eye for the Bentley Mulsanne and its storied siblings. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
