CREWE, England — The 2011 Bentley Mulsanne will be one expensive vehicle when it arrives in the U.S. next fall. Bentley on Tuesday said the flagship Mulsanne will start at $285,000, excluding the destination charge and gas-guzzler tax.

Those two items should propel the Mulsanne close to $300,000. The destination charge should be $2,595, said Bentley's U.S. spokesman, David Reuter, in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line. The gas-guzzler tax, which is not yet determined, should also inflate the bottom line.

"Gas-guzzler tax will be determined following final EPA confirmation of fuel economy numbers," Reuter wrote. "For reference, [Bentley] Arnage was [a] $4,500 [gas] guzzler [tax]."

Still, that does not make the Mulsanne the most expensive Bentley in these parts.

"That title would belong to the [Bentley] Azure T convertible at $363,000," Reuter wrote.

In a statement, Bentley said "the expression of interest" in the Mulsanne "easily exceeds our 2010 production targets." Production kicks off in the second quarter of 2010. The Mulsanne's U.S. customers can choose among 114 paint colors, 21 carpet colors, nine wood veneers and 24 interior leather hides, the automaker said.

Inside Line says: The luxury-goods market apparently is still alive and kicking, given the interest in the Mulsanne and the pricing strategy. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
