Bentley Recalls Continental for Faulty Fuel Filters

CREWE, England — Bentley Motors is recalling 13,420 Flying Spurs, Continental GTs, GTCs and GT Speeds from the 2004-'08 model years to fix a problem that could cause the car's fuel filter to corrode and leak.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports findings that road salt can corrode the outside of the fuel filter. "This could lead to the filter housing becoming porous with a corresponding fuel leak," explained NHTSA in the recall summary. If around an ignition source, the fuel leak "could result in a fire," the agency continued.

"This is something we are covering worldwide, but have not seen any instances of [the problem] on a North American product. The road salt mostly used in the U.K. and Russia has caused the fuel filter to corrode and possibly leak. We have not yet had any actual fires, but from a safety standpoint feel that it is necessary to take the necessary precautions," explained spokesman David Reuter.

Owners driving any of the affected Continental models should visit their dealer to have the fuel filter replaced and the retaining clip repositioned. The recall started at the end of May. Owners can contact Bentley at (800) 777-6923 for further details.

What this means to you: Head to your dealer as soon as possible if you own one of the Bentleys mentioned. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
