2004 New York Auto Show
New York might not be much of a car town, but that's never stopped it from putting on a first-rate auto show. This year's event was no exception as it attracted numerous manufacturers and journalists alike. As the last major show of the season, New York offers one last chance to see what might be hitting showrooms this fall and beyond.
Headlining this year's event was a flurry of new luxury cars that promises to inject a serious dose of style and performance into their respective segments. Cadillac introduced its new flagship sedan, the STS, that shares the same edgy styling as its CTS and SRX siblings. Buick unveiled the Velite concept, a luxurious four-place convertible that could find its way into the lineup in the next several years while Acura revealed what it called a prototype of its next RL flagship. Mercedes had nearly 10 of its newest models on display, but the real showstopper was the SL65 AMG that boasts over 600 horsepower from its twin turbo V12 power plant. Infiniti and Lexus also showed off new sedans in the form of the M45 and LF-C concepts.
Although cars are making a comeback, SUVs are still as popular as ever. Jeep is looking to get back on top of the segment that it started with an all-new Grand Cherokee that will offer Hemi power for the first time. Land Rover isn't known for making big changes too often so the introduction of its LR3 sport-ute grabbed some headlines. On a slightly smaller but no less important scale, Suzuki took the wraps off its new Forenza wagon while Kia brought out a similarly sized wagon in the form of the Spectra 5.
