AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Audi is targeting the Porsche Boxster and Cayman with its new TTS coupe and convertible, which are slated to reach U.S. showrooms in late 2008. Sole engine for the U.S. market is the 265-horsepower 2.0-liter TFSI.

The turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder gas engine makes 258 pound-feet of torque and will drive all four wheels through a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Audi claims 0-60-mph acceleration will take 4.9 seconds for the coupe and 5.1 seconds for the convertible, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

Audi says the TTS will out-accelerate the Boxster S and the Cayman S, and will pace the BMW Z4 M and Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG. The U.S. editions of those models sell for $53,000 to $64,000. Audi won't announce pricing on the '09 TTS until closer to introduction, but hinted the stickers will start at less than $50,000.

The TTS will be offered in the U.S. with a choice of 18- or 19-inch wheels, as well as unique grille, bumpers and rocker panels. A new feature is Audi's magnetic ride control, with continuously adjustable damping.

What this means to you: The TTS is a gorgeous and extremely fast car, but the $50,000 price point will vault this Audi into some pretty fast and exclusive company. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
