AUBURN HILLS, Michigan/INGOLSTADT, Germany — There's some good news and bad news for Audi fans in the U.S. The German automaker confirmed for Inside Line that the new fuel-efficient 1.8 TFSI engine in the TT will not be coming to the States. However, the U.S. will get both coupe and roadster versions of the TTS, which will arrive in showrooms at the end of the year.

Audi of America Spokesman Christian Bokich said that "very U.S.-specific performance data" on the hot-rod Audi TTS is expected to be released tomorrow or Friday. "The TTS will help bolster our increasing performance credibility, which is key, yet keeping very respectable fuel economy numbers," he said in e-mailed correspondence on Wednesday. He added that the exact fuel economy numbers on the TTS are not yet available for the U.S.

Audi AG on Wednesday said it is expanding the TT line with a new entry-level engine: the 1.8 TFSI. "We will not get this engine, as it's best for us, our dealers and our customers to keep things simple," Bokich said.

The 1.8 TFSI with turbocharger and direct injection delivers 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Audi said the engine "offers great fuel efficiency — with the coupe using just 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers (35.1 mpg) and the roadster using 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.09 mpg)."

Also new to the Audi TT lineup is Quattro all-wheel drive for the 2.0 TFSI.

What this means to you: This is a big week for U.S. fans of the Audi TTS, as we finally get a look at specifications. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
