    Audi TT Roadster
Geneva - The Audi TT has traded in its globular metal dome for a rag. The TT Roadster, as it's called, retains the unique styling characteristics of the Coupe, but manages to look even more bizarre thanks to its open cockpit.

Mechanically and stylistically, the Roadster differs little from the Coupe. From the outset, the Coupe was designed to retain its structural integrity with or without the benefit of a hard top. What's changed is the nature of the driving experience and the visual highlights.

Most obvious are two gleaming aluminum rollbars that rise behind each seat, offering rollover protection as well as distinctive style. A sporty three-spoke steering wheel, aluminum-accented interior controls and optional "Baseball Glove" stitched leather seats complete the interior ensemble.

To reduce turbulence, an electrically operated glass windbreak slides into position at the touch of a button, fitting perfectly between rollbars. The top may be raised or lowered either manually or, as an option, electronically. By hand, the operation should take approximately 10 seconds; motorized, it takes 15 seconds.

Audi engineers made sure that the top could be lifted using only one hand, which buyers will no doubt appreciate, especially since manual tops are generally less costly to the consumer. A glass rear window with defroster is standard. The fabric tonneau cover must be attached manually, and it features an anti-theft mechanism, which allows for release only after a door is unlocked.

The TT Roadster will come in two versions: 1.8 T front-wheel drive or 1.8 T Quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The turbocharged engine produces 180 horsepower, taking the car from zero to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Order the Quattro, and get a larger turbocharger with a second intercooler. The engine powers out 225 horsepower, cutting a second from the zero-to-60 times.

This eye-catching roadster will make its way to market as a 2000 model, and pricing should be slightly higher than that of the TT Coupe. But it'll be worth it. With all the attention this car is bound to attract, why not take some for yourself?
