Don’t think of the 2007 Audi S8 as a high performance sedan – think of it as a luxury tourer with an edge. In fact, the S8 and A8 aren’t all that different – but the S version does get a few exterior upgrades that hint at the car's substantial power. "S8" and "V10" badges are the obvious indicators - even the front brake calipers get the S8 treatment. Other styling cues include aluminum sideview mirrors, an integrated decklid spoiler, oval exhaust tips, and a unique grille. But it's the S8's numerous mechanical upgrades that give it real punch. The driveline and aluminum chassis have been modified, the adaptive air suspension has been firmed up and the steering ratio is slightly quicker. To really drive the point home, the S8 packs all the authority of a 5,2 liter, 450 hp, direct injection V10. It's sourced from Lamborghini and Audi says it can move the S8 from 0-60 in less than five seconds. But after numerous runs, 5.6 seconds was the best time we could coax out of the big sedan. BMW's more aggressive and slightly smaller M5 can do it in 4.8 seconds. The six-speed tiptronic transmission offers smooth, positive shifts and the shorter final-drive ratio works well with the engine. The S8's power is best controlled manually through the steering-wheel shift paddles – in fact, that's how we achieved our best 0-60 run. The S8 came to a stop from 60 miles per hour in 112 feet – the same distance as the M5. But around town, the big Audi's brakes feel too grabby and abrupt for our tastes. Still, the S8 is much more than a one trick pony. What it lacks in pure punch, it more than makes up for with refined luxury. . Interior materials are top-notch especially the upgraded leather package with contrasting stitching and a soft headliner. Red illumination adds sport to Audi's flawless instrument panel while carbon fiber and brushed metal replace the A8's wood trim. Our tester also came with an optional Bang and Olufsen sound system that adds more than 6 grand to the price tag. If you're looking save some money, here's the option you leave off – the Standard Bose stereo sounds just fine and you'll still get Audi's excellent Multi Media Interface. Clearly, the Audi S8 is more Bentley than BMW but the car doesn't skimp on fun. It’s an excellent luxury car that adds the confidence of a V10, all wheel drive and a comfortable cabin. This is a grown-up sport sedan that places luxury just ahead of performance but doesn't come up short on either - a combination that almost makes the Audi S8 worth its $100,000 price tag - almost.

The M5 is not in the same model class as the S8, why even mention it? Get a 7 series if you want to compare.
