    What Is It?

    What's Special About It?
In order to battle the BMW M5, Cadillac STS-V and Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, Audi has stuffed a V10 engine into the A6. It's the same 5.2-liter, direct-injection V10 engine that will see duty in the new S8, but it's been retuned to make 420 horsepower, which is 30 hp less than the S8 is packing. No word yet on a torque figure, but we expect it to be a few pound-feet shy of the S8's rating of 397.

You know times are good when 420 hp makes a machine the weakest car in its class, but that is the deal here. Both the E55 and STS-V are packing 469 hp, while the 5.0-liter V10 in the M5 makes 500 hp. Despite having less grunt than its rivals, Audi says there's enough thrust to slingshot the S6 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

A six-speed Tiptronic that's been massaged for quicker gear changes sends the power to all four wheels via Audi's "quattro" all-wheel-drive system. There's also the requisite sport-tuned suspension that features 19-inch wheels wearing 265/35 rubber.

Understated power marks the personality of the S6's body. Subtle differences — such as vertical accents in the grille, metallic mirrors, LED daytime running lights, quad exhaust outlets, and a discreet kickup to the rear deck lid — hint at the power.

Sport seats with "pronounced" lateral supports have integral head restrains and are covered in Alcantara (similar to suede) and leather. A secondary digital speedometer is also fitted along with carbon fiber and metallic trim.

The 2007 S6 has been slated for a late-summer/early-fall release, and no pricing information was available at press time.
