ESSEN/INGOLSTADT, Germany — In response to requests from customers, Audi said on Wednesday that it will roll out a motorsport version of the Audi R8 at the 2008 Essen Auto Show. The car has been developed for customer teams.

The racing version of the Audi R8 made its world premiere on Thursday.

"From fall 2009, therefore, Audi Sport will for the first time offer a racing car that was specifically developed for customer use," the German automaker said in a statement. "Ever since the Audi R8 was unveiled, we've been inundated with inquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8, we will offer customers a racing car packed with sophisticated technology and characteristic Audi quality, but which is nevertheless easy to handle," said Wolfgang Ulrich, head of Audi Motorsport.

No word yet about pricing or vehicle specifications.
