    Just the Facts:
    • The future of Audi's Quattro Concept is to be decided before the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
    • Quattro GmbH boss is "optimistic" it will be given the green light.
    • It would take 2-3 years to develop the production car.
    • RS versions of Q-series models have already been ruled out.

    ZURICH, Switzerland — The future of the Audi Quattro Concept will not be decided until the eve of the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show in September. Quattro GmbH boss Stephan Reil confirmed the final decision has been delayed but he is "optimistic" that the concept, which debuted at the 2010 Paris Auto Show last fall, will get the green light for production.

    Speaking at the launch of the Audi Q3 crossover in Switzerland, Reil said the best solution would be "a small-volume exotic car with a production run of 500-1,000 cars." Hitting the target weight of 3,086 pounds would require, "the use of lots of exotic materials," which would necessitate a high price and low volumes. But there would be "no better way of demonstrating Audi's 'Ultra' lightweight technologies."

    The RS5-derived engine will also need a major overhaul if it is to be successfully integrated into the bespoke aluminum chassis. "We need more power than the RS5," said Reil, "and it needs to be mounted longitudinally instead of transversely." Reil likened the scale of the project to the development of the R8, but claimed a production version could be ready in 2-3 years.

    He admitted that Quattro GmbH already has a working prototype that is "so amazing." He also dismissed concerns that there is no direct link between the concept and motorsport, while its inspiration, the original Sport Quattro, was bred for rallying. "If you ask two guys about this, you will already get five different opinions," he said. "It is not a big thing."

    Reil also confirmed that the RS brand would not be used on Q-series Audis due to the high center of gravity afforded by the SUV platforms. But he refused to rule out an RS version of the A7: "We did two generations of the RS6 so why not do an A7."

    Inside Line says: In 2-3 years Audi will need another halo car, and the Quattro could be the perfect solution.

    @Jazzy7 camaro? come on.

    This is 100% corrado. VW isnt going to be putting out a new one, so Audi is. Every part on my Rado has an audi logo on it. I sure as hell want a new corrado. This is following the same legacy as the corrado, too expensive to make, but sure to be a beast.

    It looks like a shrunken Camaro...It'll be a sales success with a base price of 18K and not a cent more.

    This is a beautiful car but it SUCKS that it has to be monsterously expensive and exclusive.  Isn't the R8 already filling that gap?  Why does Audi need another car like that.  I say build it, but built it for $30K!

    some people are dreamers.  Audi is not Dodger or Chevrolet.  They already have an A5 in the 50k range.  They want to build more expensive and exclusive cars... not less.  There is no way they could build that vehicle to spec and sell it "cheaply".  It's the same with S4 in comparison to a Mitsu Evo.  You want Audi to build a Camaro or Mustang... but that's not their market.

    It is a little CTS-V like and I like it.   hotrodw said it best it should be a mid to low range car for Audi and it will sell well.  Leave the R8 at the top and make something for the normal people like me.

    I love this car, but I hate the desire for exclusivity and exotic car price tag.  I say make it 3500 pounds and $50k, power it with the turbo 5, and build as many as the market demands.  It doesn't need to have super car performance, and it certainly doesn't need to be collectible.  The R8 already fills that position in the lineup nicely.
